Language Resources

For anyone exchanging in France or Belgium (or any French speaking country for that matter), you should check out the website: http://bonpatron.com/en/ . It’s an online program that checks your spelling and grammar for you in French, it won’t give you any translations but it is SUPER HELPFUL just to make sure that you are putting all of the words in your sentences in the right places.

For translation http://www.wordreference.com will always be my first option. When you search for a word it doesn’t give you just one translated word (like google translate UGH), it gives you a whole list of options depending on the context of the conversation, what you want to say etc. There are also forums that people use to discuss the correct way to say phrases and such and a lot of native French speakers are very active and ready to help.

Word reference also has dictionaries for Spanish  Italian, German, Russian, Portuguese  Polish, Romanian, Czech, Greek, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic.

So there you go, language resources!

First Host Family!

I just emailed my host sister and host mother for the first time. First impression: they are the most welcoming and kind people I have ever spoken to. I also wrote my responses entirely in French which wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be. I did use a translator and wordreference.com, but I didn’t rely on them. The majority of it came from me and I’m really proud of that. I did have to double check some grammar and look up several phrases that I didn’t know how to word, but that is expected. Overall I feel very good about it.

This post is dedicated to my iPhone, the French keyboard function, and autocorrect. Without you I would be missing an absurd amount of accents.

Lille!

Lots of exciting things! Last week I got an email from my YEO in France. I will be living in district 1520 in the city of Lille with the rotary club of Lille Nord Nouveau Siècle.

Lille is very far north, right near the Belgian border. I read somewhere that if you take the TGV (a high speed train) Lille is only about an hour away from Paris.

Did I mention how beautiful it is? The architecture is amazing. There is nothing like it in the U.S. Excited doesn’t even come close to accurately describing how eager I am to live there.
